ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - At least nine Kurdish fighters were injured, including four in critical condition, in an Iranian attack that targeted a camp belonging to the Kurdistan Freedom Party (PAK) near Erbil, the Kurdish dissident group reported on Monday.
“At 21:45 [pm local time] this evening, the occupier Iranian state targeted the Chamshar base of [the Kurdistan Freedom Party’s armed wing] the Kurdistan National Army, located northwest of Erbil near the Darashakran camp, using two drones and a missile,” the group said in a statement on Facebook, adding that “nine Peshmerga fighters were wounded, four of whom are in critical condition as a result.”
In a follow-up statement posted on X, the group said the attack involved “at least four missiles and explosive drones,” adding that it continues to come under attack by Tehran despite an ongoing ceasefire between Iran and the United States.
The US and Israel launched a large-scale aerial campaign against Iran in late February, striking thousands of targets across the country during six weeks of hostilities.
In response, Iran carried out thousands of drone and missile strikes across the Middle East, targeting alleged US assets - particularly in Gulf Arab states - as well as launching retaliatory attacks against Israel.
The Iranian response also involved Iraqi armed groups aligned with the Tehran-led ‘Axis of Resistance,’ with several factions claiming responsibility for attacks on purported US targets in the region, including in Iraq and the Kurdistan Region.
Iran and its allied factions have also ramped up its attacks on Kurdish dissident groups in the Region.
According to Rudaw tracking until Thursday, the Kurdistan Region has endured approximately 855 drone and missile attacks since the outbreak of the Iran war, resulting in at least 20 deaths and nearly 130 injuries.
Since the beginning of the month of May alone, the Region has experienced 25 drone and missile attacks, 18 of which struck areas in Erbil province, while the remaining seven targeted Kurdistan’s eastern Sulaimani province. With the latest attack, the number has now risen further.
